I’m chief videojournalist with The Irish Times, based in Dublin, having previously worked as a photographer and deputy picture editor with that organisation. I've also been a staff photographer for the Longford Leader, London Post Group, The Irish Press and Irish Independent. In 2007 I worked for the Sydney Morning Herald, Australia on a one-year exchange programme.

I’ve won a number of awards including PPAI Photographer Of The Year Award five times. I've represented Ireland twice in The Fuji European Press Photographer Awards and won the UK Picture Editors Guild, Photographer of the Year Award in 2004. I was runner-up in the Videographer of the Year category of the 2017 UK Picture Editors Guild Awards and in 2018 won that category with a short film entitled 'Jude Hughes, underground tailor'. In 2021 after two years work I completed an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography from University of the Arts London/LCC.

This site contains a small selection of my photography and video work. All content displayed is  ©Bryan O'Brien or ©The Irish Times so get in touch if you are considering using any of the work in any way.
